Rider & Test Requirements

All learner motorcyclists and moped riders must complete (CBT) compulsory basic training before they can ride on the road. Bike Start is an approved (ATB) training body using a DSA approved site for all its off-road training with qualified and friendly instructors.

Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) was introduced on 1 December 1990 for all new provisional licence holders of both mopeds and motorcycles. CBT is not a test, there is not an exam – it is a course of training that you are required to complete satisfactorily.

The CBT course syllabus includes 5 elements

rider & test requirements

1. - Introduction

This covers legal requirements, equipment & clothing and an eyesight test.

2. - Practical on-site training

In this element we will take you through basic machine checks including side & centre stands, wheeling, braking, starting and stopping the engine. We will also make sure you are familiar with the Control Positions Overview, Foot Control, left & right handlebar controls and the Instrument panel.

3. - Practical on-site riding

All our training is suited to your individual needs we will ensure you are competent in riding including clutch control, gear changing and braking. As well as the other necessary skills such as indicating & manoeuvring including rear observation, lifesaver shoulder checks & the OSM/PSL routines. This element also requires you to move off, stop, turn right and left, u- turns and junctions.

4. - Practical on-road training

This element will give you a deeper understanding of legal requirements, the Highway Code and an understanding of external factors such as weather conditions, road surfaces, alcohol & drugs, attitudes and hazard perception. We will also be considering vulnerability, speed, anticipation, rear observation, road positioning and separation distance.

5. - Practical on-road riding

This element puts into practice all the skills learnt in the above elements; you will be able to demonstrate competence and safety in range of road and traffic conditions. This training will include coping with a range of hazards such as traffic lights, roundabouts, junctions, pedestrian crossings, bends, gradients and obstructions. We will also ensure that you can bring the machine to a stop under full control as required in an emergency, manoeuvre satisfactorily and carry out the U turn correctly
Once you have satisfactorily completed all five elements, a Certificate of Completion of Training (DL196) will be issued. This is valid for two years and validates the provisional license; you must keep them together and produce at the first motorcycle test.
